Parisian party on the
River Marne
Enjoy a short break to Paris with a difference!
On Sunday a boat will take you through locks and pretty canals in central
Paris, until you reach the countryside. When you step off the boat you
step back in time to a period when taverns, called "guingettes" lined
the banks of the River Marne. A popular pastime from the mid 1800's to
1900's, workers used to escape the capital to eat and drink at the riverside
on a Sunday afternoon. Some would take part in regattas, or swimming
and afterwards dance the day away to live music. Many rowing boats can
still be seen, but the regattas are no more. These days, the guingettes
are enjoying something of a revival as tourists and Parisians alike spend
nostalgic musical afternoons eating, drinking and dancing. So, join the
party for some good old fashioned Parisian fun!
