Short Breaks in
Northern France
Arras, Lille and Amiens have charming old towns,
with shops, sights and restaurants aplenty. The most prominent feature
of Arras is the Baroque central square where you will find shops as well
as the catacombs, which played a significant part in the First World
War. Amiens and the surrounding area in the Somme also saw a lot of action
during that period, but you will also find older history when you discover
its Gothic cathedral, (the largest of its kind in France) and also the
medieval canals which are equally as pretty as those you find in Bruges.
In Lille small cobbled streets lead from its grand central square to
other small squares, all of which are lined with shops, from boutiques
to high street fashion. In Lille there is also the massive Wazemmes market
on a Sunday morning, where you can buy all manner of food indoors or
pick up something unusual from the many stalls out on the square.
