Heroes of the Telemark
The Telemark region may not have fjords, but it
enjoys a temperate climate plus mountains where waterfalls gush down
rock faces and rivers seem to trickle along almost out of sight at the
bottom of steep wooded ravines. Elsewhere in the region, calm lakes stretch
out between rolling hills, which turn a beautiful russet and yellow in
the autumn. Telemark also boasts two unique and fascinating attractions;
firstly its incredible canal and locks and secondly the Vemork Industrial
Museum, best known for its exciting war history - Vemork was at the centre
of one of the most important acts of sabotage during World War II, when
Norwegian forces stopped the Germans developing an atomic bomb from heavy
water produced there.
