Suggested Itinerary for Edinburgh Military Tattoo

The word Tattoo is derived from the Dutch word "Tap-toe" which means quite literally "turn off the taps". The signal, which indicated that soldiers should return to their quarters and that the beer in the taverns should be turned off, was transmitted by drumbeat each evening. Eventually this developed into a ceremonial performance of military music by massed bands. Since 1950 the Edinburgh Military Tattoo has been an annual event held over the period of the International Festival on the Castle Esplanade. Some 200,000 people now attend it each year from all parts of the world.

Hotel space in Edinburgh is always at a premium, never more so than in the summer months - August in particular; not only is the Tattoo a major annual international event, but the acclaimed Edinburgh Festival takes place at the same time.

For this reason we have chosen quality hotel accommodation in Glasgow, easily accessible by the M8 to central Edinburgh (just under an hour’s drive by coach). We have included dinner on all nights except for Tattoo night but we can arrange a late supper for you on your return to the hotel - simply ask for details when making your booking.
